Contacts are matched on first email address, and on first phone number when there is no email. A match is merged, so any new phone or email is added to the existing contact rather than creating a second record.
Exports are CSV. Each file is written with a UTF-8 byte order mark so accented names and Rand symbols survive the trip into a spreadsheet.
